stockholm fashion week: ewa i walla

In the summer of 2011, we pay an early morning visit to the mayoress in her apple garden. She is beautiful and romantic in light organdy, shimmering silk skirts and French laces. The early hour’s coolness is forcing her to put her knitted shawl over her shoulders when we are invited to breakfast in her lilac bower. She has her little parasol to protect her face from the rising sun and tells us eagerly about all the gossip from the little village….”

” A walking bum suddenly interrupts the breakfast. In dirty pants and a patched, old linen shirt he stands at the gate and kindly asks if there is any work he can perform at the country estate during the day. The mayoress inspects the bum from top to toe, looking over his unwashed clothes and rough boots. But she also sees the honesty in this vagabond’s eyes and tells him to go to the back of the house to her maid….”

“The bum does as he is told and gets some breakfast from the maid. She sniffs at this sunburned, rough worker in his patched clothes and broken boots. To mark her position she straightens herself up and strokes her pale lilac linen dress with her hands, corrects the checked apron and tightens the cardigan. He will certainly not get any ideas about who the boss is around here!”

needless to say, ewa i walla & her s/s 2011 collection are what keep me going along the fashion path rather than ditching it all in favor of writing about celebrities at their worst.  as often the fashion world is largely indistinguishable from that.

the label was founded in 1990, notable today for use of natural fabrics & for finding inspiration in farmers.  i’m not seeing that so much here, but there does seem a rather heavy japanoiserie thing going, with the heavy folds, draping, and scraping middle school references out simultaneously with giving us stuff those kids would never wear.  or lisbeth salander.  (yeah, i had to say it.  have we seen anything from sfw that she would wear?  where does that chick shop?)

the collars may have pushed it, the cuteness, a bit too hard, but she made it up with those pieces trailing, dripping and many of the head things.  however, points are subtracted for using the sixteen year old pretending to be a fourteen year old lest she lose some of her cache as the sparkly young thing below:

i know i’m not supposed to say it, but my favorite collection at sfw.  others were techinically perfect, sharp, but this was the most enjoyable.  who else would give us a story with our show?  all we need is some animal crackers & juice to fully enjoy it.
