bafw: paula ledesma

so actually we haven’t encountered the work of designer paula ledesma before, but as buenos aires fashion week is a rather small event it seemed okay to take on a new name, particularly as the a/w 2013 collection, with its delicately intricate knitwear, was so compelling. i mean, seriously, who can say no to that fine crochet work, and those amazing-fanciful knitted headpiece-mask combo-things the models all sported? pure win, non?

anyway, the autumn ranged was entitled ‘imaginary warriors,’ with planeta mujer explaining that it was (trans.) “inspired by an illustration made from the imagination of the designer of a timeless warrior within a fantasy world.” no one really went on to explain that at any length, but i guess we can see different elements taking from various fighter garb, whether it be the gray patterning on black leggings to appear something like armor, or those masks, which are maaaybe supposed to be like zorro pieces?

ms. ledesma is primarily known as a knitwear designer, and that was what was strong at work today, with entre mujeres explaining that range materials included angora, merino wool, lurex, mohair, alpaca, cotton, cashmere, and silk. and the designer told the bafw site that part of her idea this season was to (trans.) “(h)ighlight and transform the natural silhouette,” with plenty of folding, geometric structure, and overlapping of fabrics. i’d say it was all very sensuous, like catherine zeta-jones in entrapment, with all of her slinky black figure-hugging catsuits and the like.

the colour palette was quite beautiful and autumnal, with a base of black and deep gray intertwining with antiqued ivory, camel, merlot, wheat, and harvest gold, with a few upticks of cadet and sky blue. what i ultimately liked about the collection was the wearability factor, as although most of the looks were a little too much together, a lot of these pieces–such as the pretty sweater tops and bandage-esque skirts and dresses–could lift right out and into ‘real life’, although those studded and embellished leggings we’ve seen before chez agnieszka maciejak for the s/s 2012 season, and they looked a bit tired then.
