moscow fashion week: svetlana tegin

in an abrupt about-face from her s/s 2011 work, svetlana tegin brought out the minimalism, as so many others showing in russia have done for f/w 2011, setting her collection to the strains of tantric tibetan music.

according to her website, this season we are looking at (trans.)”(a) woman warrior that combines the rigor and honesty with magnetic appeal….the Fair Lady becomes a perfect warrior.  And if the world is destined to become a battlefield, she must look a modern Valkyrie.”

largely framed in black (often in leather, with several looks depicting heavy shine), aubergine, flame, and ochre occasionally added spice to the palette, while those hints of medieval crept into the minimalist pieces as corsets, boots, capes, gloves, leggings, and wide arm shield-like sleeves.

frankly, in contrast to her spring range, the designer has come a long way, crafting beautiful garments that tell a careful story by the same measure, but remembering that things like tailoring and materials can be just as important as theatricality and intense show lighting.

in the face of so many good minimalist collections coming out of moscow this season (lena tsokalenko, cyrille gassiline) it’s difficult to discern which has been the best, but i certainly liked ms. tegin’s tinge of strength added to the mix.  in the case of a few dresses, such as the bold evening gown below, a wide vase-like neckline evoked the late alexander mcqueen.  perhaps it’s just a coincidence, but she has dropped a few hints she’s going in that direction.
